George D. Newman
George D. Newman
was a longtime exhibitor of Hackneys from his Duncannon Farm in St. Catharines,
Ont. Although George had a particular memorable drive with the champion
Hackney Pony mare, Centurian’s Lady Lynda; Mr. Newman’s hallmark,
for which he was well known, was the turnout of his beautiful Hackney Horses.
As a highly skilled whip, he was often “the one to beat” in Gig, Tandem and
Pair classes with such champions as Suddie Marshall, Marden Striplight, Marden
Sonata, and Nork Elegance. His debonair aplomb was a most welcome sight
in both Canada and the United States.
For all his success in
the show ring, George Newman’s greatest contribution, where he has
no equal was his sportsmanship. Mr. Newman could be counted on as
the voice of reason and encouragement in helping both new and experienced
exhibitors. Mr. Newman and his wife Kate, along with their Family,
were also gracious hosts of the St. Catharines Horse Show each summer.
As Past President of the Canadian Hackney Society and worthy role model for
future generations; from his fellow Hackney enthusiasts around the world,
to his Family and friends, only the highest regard is held for George Newman.
