Rhymes and Reason
(M2975) Foaled in 1977, Rhymes and Reason was bred by H. Charles
Armstrong, Brampton. Sired by Cassilis Debonaire and out of Jewel's Pride,
this bay gelding follows full siblings Rag A Muffin and Rags to Riches
into the Canadian Hackney Society Hall of Fame. Brought out in harness in
the early 1980s by resident ABC Farm trainer Lawrence Carss, as Rhyme Nor
Reason, he became a popular winner in amateur, ladies and gig classes, as
well as in pairs and tandems, competing at shows in Ontario, Devon,
Illinois and Kentucky State Fairs, Syracuse, New York and Eastern States.
In later years, Dave Smith took on the training duties, with the Armstrong
family keeping ownership. For a season, the Smith's leased the pony with
Dave and Gail sharing the driving duties. Rhymes and Reason retired to the
green pastures of the ABC Farm for a well deserved retirement. His
consistancy and versatility in the many classes he was shown in made for a
suberb ambassador for the Hackney pony. (Inducted April
